Introduction. Every year the number of children with reading disabilities increases. The article focuses on the neuropsychological approach to the study of reading disability in children with visual impairments.
Objective. To investigate the influence of neuropsychological indicators on reading disability in children with visual impairments.
Materials and methods. The study sample consisted of 72 children aged 8 to 12 years, of which 36 children had various visual impairments. The study used the neuropsychological test battery of O.R. Luria (children’s version by Zh.M. Glozman). Statistical analysis was performed using IBM SPSS Statistics 23.
Results. Analysis of neuropsychological tests revealed significant differences (p<0.050) between the experimental and control groups. The neuropsychological symptom complex (cluster) for children with visual impairments contains certain markers responsible for regulation and control: failure to remember the sequence of elements, failure to remember the semantic elements of the text, lack of formation of holistic reading, low reading pace, inability to compose a program for solving the problem, difficulties in finding a generalized concept, specific-situational generalization.
Conclusions. It has been established that reading disorders in children with visual impairments are influenced by the level of formation of neuropsychological indicators, namely regulatory mechanisms, both in the motor and intellectual spheres. Understanding the neuropsychological mechanisms of reading disorders in children with visual impairments is of crucial importance for differential neuropsychological diagnostics and subsequent correctly constructed correctional work route of a neuropsychologist.
